The centre piece commonly known as a spade with a cricket in America, rotates and pushes into the roof of the mouth asking for an instant yeild to the pressure from the horse. It is crucial that the curb chain is set well or the spade can badly bruise the roof of the mouth. The Hartwell mouthpiece has a port in the centre of the mouthpiece to allow for more tongue room but the mouthpiece also has a forward curve to it as well allowing for more tongue room behind the bit as well as in the centre. More Info
